2021- "An Unlikely Tale"
On Saturday, February 1, 2020, the Board of Directors
reviewed 70 design entries in an all-day meeting and picked 7 finalists
to be presented to the general membership at the annual Pick-The-Float meeting. |
|
|
|
On Thursday, February 6, 2020 the paid general
membership met at the Burbank Fire Training Center to review the 7
finalists. Through a series of votes, they selected the order that
these finalists will be registered in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses's
Theme Draft meeting. |
|
The membership selected "An Unlikely Tale" (working
title) as their number one choice. This design was submitted by
Jonathan Friday from Burbank, CA. |
On Wednesday, February 12, 2020 the design was submitted
and registered as our number one choice in Pasadena Tournament of
Roses's Theme Draft meeting. |
On Friday, February 21, 2020 we received confirmation that the design has been
accepted. This makes Jonathan Friday our official 2021 Design
Contest Winner.
This is Jonathan's first time winning the Burbank Rose Float Design
Contest. |

Even before our first Design Committee meeting Jonathan
started working on various options for the committee to consider. The
drawings on the left are just some of the designs that were used by the
Design Committee to get them thinking of how to place the characters.
This was presented on March 7, 2020. |
At the first Design Committee meeting, a brainstorming
session was held where all ideas were presented. To the right are

On Thursday, April 9, 2020
the Board of Directors reviewed 73 float title submissions and removed
about 8 entries before presenting the final list to the General
Membership. On Thursday, April 16, 2020 the General Membership
reviewed and voted on their favorite titles. Through a couple of
online votes, the title that received a 54% vote was "An Unlikely
Tale". This will become our official float title. It
should be noted that the entire General Meeting was held online due to
the COVID-19 Global Pandemic which prevented us from meeting in person. |

After the Decoration Committee's first
meeting, most of the main colors and materials were picked which allowed
the first draft of the color rendering to be created, as seen above.
These drawings were released on April 20, 2020. |
After the Decorations
Committee reviewed the above renderings, they requested some design
changes, primarily having the young knight without any armor and what
would that look like. Below are some sample drawings with and
without armor. |

The Decorations Committee
picked the design without armor as seen below. This drawing was
released on April 23, 2020. |

At the next Decorations
Committee meeting several small changes to the design were requested.
Some items were requested to test and see how it would look, so several
more drawings were created showing different variations. Take a
look at them below. |

After a few more tweaks, the
final color rendering was completed and released on May 8, 2020. Below is the final color

On July 15, 2020 the Pasadena
Tournament of Roses Association announced that they are unable to host
the 2021 Rose Parade on New Year's Day.
press release
PASADENA TOURNAMENT OF ROSES UNABLE TO HOST 2021 ROSE
PARADE ON NEW YEAR’S DAY
With reluctance and tremendous disappointment, the Pasadena Tournament
of Roses Association announces that, in accordance with Governor
Newsom’s Phase IV re-opening schedule, and after thoughtful
consideration of the restrictions and guidelines in place as a result of
COVID-19, we are unable to host the 2021 Rose Parade.
“The health and well-being of our parade participants and guests, as
well as that of our volunteer members, professional staff and partners,
is our number one priority,” said Bob Miller, 2021 President of the
Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. “Obviously this is not what
any of us wanted, and we held off on announcing until we were absolutely
sure that safety restrictions would prevent us from continuing with
planning for 132nd Rose Parade.”
Enjoyed by millions around the world, the Rose Parade is held each
January 1 in celebration of the New Year. Since its inception in 1891,
the Parade has not occurred only three times – the wartime years of
1942, 1943 and 1945.
While the parade itself is more than five months from now, the
preparation for such a large event typically begins in February. “In
addition to the advance planning required by our band and equestrian
units, the construction of our floats takes many months and typically
requires thousands of volunteers to gather in ways that aren’t in
compliance with safety recommendations and won’t be safe in the coming
months,” said David Eads, Executive Director/CEO. “While we are
extremely disappointed that we are unable to host the parade, we believe
that not doing so will prevent the spread of COVID-19, as well as
protect the legacy of the Rose Parade for generations to come.”
The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association also hosts the Rose Bowl
Game each January 1. The planning for this year’s Rose Bowl Game, which
will serve as a College Football Playoff Semifinal, is still ongoing.
“We continue to work with the College Football Playoff and our
collegiate partners to explore what this year’s college football season
will look like amidst COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines. While
the safety and well-being of the student athletes, university personnel
and fans is our top priority, we remain hopeful that the Granddaddy of
Them All will take place on New Year’s Day,” continued Eads.
“I know that I speak on behalf of our 935 volunteer members, and the
hundreds of thousands in our community for which the Rose Parade is an
annual tradition, when I
say we will miss the joy of coming together and the making of memories,”
said Miller. “But know that we will not miss this opportunity to
celebrate a New Year and healthy new beginnings on January 1, 2021.”
“We all know what the Rose Parade means to us here in Pasadena, as well
as to New Year celebrations around the world. To know that we won’t get
to experience this great tradition on January 1, 2021, is extremely
disappointing. However, we also know that we must act responsibly to
protect our community in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said
Pasadena Mayor Terry Tornek. “We look forward to working with the
Pasadena Tournament of Roses on their reimagined New Year celebration,
as well as the return of the Rose Parade on January 1, 2022.”
In considering the options for the 2021 Rose Parade, the Tournament of
Roses commissioned a feasibility and safety report for hosting the Rose
Parade during the COVID-19 Pandemic, conducted by public health experts
from the Keck School of Medicine of USC. That report showed that even
with intensive effort to ensure compliance with public health measures
such as six-foot distancing and face masks, it is likely that Rose
Parade activities before, during and after the event would inevitably
lead to large numbers of individuals (many of whom represent high risk
groups for COVID-19 complications, such as retirees over age 60) in
close proximity to each other, potentially, in some cases, without
masks. This creates a high-risk environment for viral spread, including
super-spreader events. In addition, thousands of parade participants and
spectators will travel to the Los Angeles region from across the nation
and even the world, in many cases by plane. Such travel represents
infection risk to the travelers, but also may lead to the importation of
the virus to the area from other regions of the country and world as
well as exportation of the virus to other regions of the nation and
world when these spectators return home.
Although the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association will not be
hosting its 132nd Rose Parade, they will celebrate the New Year on
January 1, 2021. Working in conjunction with our broadcast partners and
sponsors, the Tournament of Roses has plans underway for a new kind of
New Year celebration for those across the country and around the world.
“Each year, the country turns its eyes to Pasadena for America’s New
Year celebration and we plan to deliver on that important promise,” said
Eads. “We may not be able to host our traditional five-mile march down
Colorado Boulevard, but we are exploring new and safe ways we can
collectively share in the celebration, and we look forward to announcing
further details about our exciting new plans in the coming weeks.”

“We are beyond excited about the upcoming New Year’s Day television

worldwide audience in new and dynamic ways, but also honor the Rose
Parade’s 130-year tradition,” said David Eads, executive director and
CEO of the Tournament of Roses. “Each year, tens of millions across
America and around the world invite us into their homes to celebrate the
New Year, and this year will be no different. We may not be able to make
our typical 5.5-mile march, but we are hosting a spectacular celebration
nonetheless.”
For this unprecedented TV special, the Tournament of Roses is proud to
partner with Feeding America®, the nation’s largest organization
dedicated to fighting domestic hunger through a nationwide network of
food banks. “Food insecurity has been a focus of our organization’s
efforts during the pandemic, so it was only fitting that we extend our
commitment to our re-imagined New Year Celebration,” said Bob Miller,
president of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. “We are proud
to work with Feeding America, an organization that is working to change
lives in communities across the country.”
“Food banks are feeding an average of 60% more people due to the
economic fallout of the pandemic,” said Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, CEO
of Feeding America. “We are deeply grateful to the Tournament of Roses
for helping to raise awareness and support for people facing hunger.
Their generosity will help provide much needed meals for our most
vulnerable neighbors.”
The entertainment special will also showcase seniors in high school and
colleges from bands across the country, who will come together for a
special, virtual performance of “Everything's Coming up Roses” led by a
surprise conductor. “While we have invited all the bands who were
scheduled to perform in this year’s parade to instead join us for the
2022 Rose Parade, we realize that there are many seniors who will
graduate before that. We didn’t want them to miss out on this
opportunity, so we’re giving them their very own, unique performance
spotlight,” said Bob Miller.

Since the 2021 parade was
cancelled, the Board of Directors voted to look at other options and
changes that could be made of the float. |
One option the Board considered is to place our young knight into full armor - thus
giving the viewer the opportunity to imagine both the ethnicity and
gender of the young, brave knight. The Board of Directors liked the
knight option and wanted to try to incorporate it into the rendering |
|
However, this option took away too much
from the story. You could no longer tell this was a young knight
under all that armor, so we tried removing most of the armor and show a
young girl knight with brown hair and sun kissed skin tone wearing a
more innocent one-piece jumper. In this version we left the helmet and
gloves on. |
|
and this version the gloves are off... |
|
and this version the gloves are still off
and white bows are added to the hair... |
|
Now we wanted to look at a
couple of options for the rose logo on the shield... |
|
|
Next we long discussions on
the helmet and went through several versions of helmet straps... |
|
|
|
|
And after months of going
over various details and making numerous tweaks, on December 1st, 2020
the 2022 final color rendering was completed |
|
This Unlikely Tale of
Friendship brings together a young knight and dragon rewriting their own
story, by reading together in harmony. |
|
In October 2020 the
Tournament allowed us to begin construction of the float. |
With the approval to proceed with
construction, technical drawings were created to help guide the
Construction crew.
Here are some of the Construction drawings... |
|
|
|
Construction started and
progress was being made on building the new float, however by December
2020 the COVID-19 virus spiked in Los Angeles County and a new County
order was issued banning gatherings, so all work parties were suspending
until 2021. |
