3-D Double Feature

Burbank uses a world-wide open design contest, in which anyone, anywhere, may submit a concept drawing. After the entries are received, a two-step selection process begins. First, the BTORA Board of Directors screens the designs for theme appropriateness, buildability and decoration potential. Next, the entire paid membership votes to determine the ranking of the selected designs.

The membership voted for "3D Double Feature." Parade viewers will all enjoy a trip back to the days of the drive-in movie!

The weekend movie is one of the most widely enjoyed forms of entertainment. "Hats Off" to the drive-in movie!

The film industry has played a major role in the history of Burbank. Several major studios have offices in Burbank. Ironically, there are no longer any drive-ins in the city of Burbank!.

FLOAT DESCRIPTION:

Height: 30 ft
Width: 18 ft
Length: 45 ft

The Dawg Family enjoys an evening at the local drive-in. The float includes a movie screen, monsters, family car and various movie goodies (popcorn, hot dogs, sodas).

Imagine yourself transported in time and space back to the 1950s and the local drive-in, which tonight is featuring a double feature in realistic 3-D! Imagine also your surprise when the evening at the movies turns a bit too realistic and the giant T-Rex destroys a bridge then pops out of the screen and belches smoke! The excitement builds as alien flying saucers blast skyscrapers then leave the screen and fly toward your car!

FLOWERING:

TBD

The Dawg Family’s sporty convertible is of red carnations, white Avalanche roses, Silver leaf and red Poinsettia petals.

Papa Dawg, of Cocoa palm and Uva grass, sports a shirt of dill weed with a bone pattern of small white beans.

Mama Dawg, of Uva grass and beige pampas grass, has hair bows of pink Nora carnation petals. Her floral dress pattern is split yellow mung beans, edged in fresh cranberries and pink Nora carnation petals.

Sonny Dawg is ready for bed after the movies in his footed sleeper of light yellow carnations edged in red lentil.

Over a base coat of green and yellow ground peas, the T-Rex is patterned in green Jade roses, Kermit button poms, pods, green beans, variegated Croton leaves, green Midori antherium and pineapple skin.

Alien ships of Silver leaf and silver dollar Eucalyptus emit blast rays of yellow strawflower and Oncidium orchids, tulip leaves and green dendrobiums, everlastings and white dendrobiums.

Against a light blue statice sky with clouds of cotton, cushion poms and button mums, stands the destroyed bridge of burgundy strawflower and mahogany Ti leaf. A building of ground brown lentil & yellow carnations sustains dual laser blasts and has yellow, orange and red fire. The building of annatto seed stands untouched while the third building of bronze mums and flat rolled oats has come under fire.

The base of the float is banked in a massive display of six different types of roses: orange, lemon, gold Dakar, light pink Valerie, hot pink Ravel and white-pink Esperance roses, assorted gerberas, lotus pods, pumpkins, oranges and lemons.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Number of Years in Rose Parade: 75

The 2009 Parade marks Burbank's 75th float entry in the Tournament of Roses Parade! Burbank first took part in the parade in 1914. However, we missed most of the 1920s, two entries in the 1930s were not really floats, and we were busy with WWII during the early 1940s.

The Burbank Tournament of Roses Association (BTORA) enters a mini-float in the annual "Burbank On Parade" celebration. This community spirit parade is held each spring in Burbank. BTORA members design, build and decorate their "floatlet" to fit the parade theme. BTORA has won several awards, including the President's Trophy, for best depiction of parade theme.

The BTORA is proud to be one of only six "self-built" float entries in Pasadena's annual parade. It is a year-round organization, composed entirely of volunteers, that design, build and decorate the City of Burbank's entry for the annual Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade. The float is built in Burbank's Water and Power Department yard.

A group of dedicated volunteer carvers contribute their time and sculpting talent to create the cartoon-type character heads. Opportunities to build and decorate our float are extended to Burbank residents and visitors. Among local participants are Scout groups, community service groups and high school clubs.

This is float designer Adam Ostegard's second design to be built for the City of Burbank. His previous design was "Free Dog Wash" in the 2007 Rose Parade.

ANIMATION:

Height: The T-Rex head tilts and rotates.
Flying saucer disks spin around.
Carbon dioxide (CO2) blasts from T-Rex nostrils.
Smoke machine and pyrotechnics to enhance the burning building effects.
Special lighting techniques to enhance the alien laser blast effects and the movie marquee.

INNOVATION:

Special consideration was given to the mechanism used to tilt the movie screen in order for the 30-foot-high screen to pass beneath bridges along the parade route.

Both the drive engine and the animation engine have been propane powered since 1991. A new cleaner burning propane-powered animation engine was designed and built by volunteers for the 2007 parade. The system includes a new General Motors 5.7 liter industrial engine, a 9500 watt A/C electrical generator which is integrated into the engine assembly, and a custom-built, 108 gallon hydraulic reservoir, donated by Hydro-Craft.

A computer-based animation controller is used to synchronize character movements, music, and other effects.

Several mini TV cameras are installed on the float to provide a float's view of the parade route. The driver can view the live video feed for additional observing capability. An on-board video recorder is used to produce a time-lapse video.
