Flowering Details (Names/Significance of the Flowers/Dry Materials Used):

Where the flowers will be used and for what effect:

The Bird's plumage is created in body feathers of Osiana roses, and wing feathers of overlaid purple arc anthuriums, red anthuriums and red amaranthus.  Blue Delphinium belladonna buds form the whimsical crest feathers.

The crashed peanut cart is red carnations and yellow cornmeal.  Garbanzo beans create the bumpy texture of the peanut shells.  Stripes on the peanut boxes are formed by safflower and white carnation petals.

Papa Elephant's withered skin is crushed black/silver lichen.  His headpiece and blanket are Orange Unique roses with a lavish design of Red France roses, Leonidas roses and green Kermit button mums.  The trim of the design is accented in Alsmere Gold roses.

Mama Elephant's rough skin is crushed Ming Moss.  Her headpiece and blanket are Valerie Roses outlined with Osiana and Hot Princess roses.  The floral print of the blanket is clustered white Anthuriums embellished with purple Cattleya orchids.

Baby Elephant's skin color and texture are created with crushed Ming Moss and crushed mauve Strawflower.

Bridge stonework is formed in combinations of onion seed, crushed bulgur, lettuce seed, green lentil, red beans, white beans, Ming moss, strawflower.  The grout is red clover seed.

Blue and white Irises with blue Delphinium Belladonna form the flowing stream.  The Water splash is of white Cattleya and white Dendrobium orchids.

Animation (If any; Humor, Mechanical, Complexity, etc.):

Hydraulically controlled by a time based animation system.  Movements on this float include the bird, who will flap his wings; the wheels of the peanut cart will turn; eyes and ears on Papa move, as do Mama's ears and tail, which will assist Baby to go up, down and around.

Innovations used in building this float:

The float has two main engines, one for driving the float and one for running the animation and sound systems.  Both engines have been converted to cleaner burning Propane fuel.  The float's tires are filled with foam to prevent flat tires.

Rider's Name(s) and Age(s) (Include title or character if any and location on the float. If ore than one rider, please indicate who is who.):  No external riders

Special Details About the Riders: n/a

Other Event/Parade Participation:

The Burbank Tournament of Roses Association enters a "floatlet" in Burbank On Parade, a community spirit parade held in the spring.  Association members design, build and decorate a mini-float to fit the parade theme.  We have won several awards, including the President's for best depiction of parade theme.

Participating Organization Information:

One of six "self-built" floats in the parade, the Burbank Tournament of Roses Association is a year-round organization, composed entirely of volunteers, that design, build and decorate the City of Burbank entry into the annual Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade.  The float is built and decorated in Burbank's Water and Power Department yard.

Special Interest Information (unique information about decorators, etc.):

A group of dedicated in-house volunteer carvers contribute their time and talent sculpting foam to create the cartoon type character heads.

Opportunities to build and decorate extend to residents and visitors of Burbank and surrounding communities.  Among participants are scout groups, community service groups and high school clubs.
