Burbank Tournament of Roses Association presents the 66th entry for the City of Burbank.

Chaos reigns when Papa falls asleep on the job while Mama has a day off.

It's a special day. Papa has agreed to watch the little ones. After all, how hard could it be? Mama does it every day! Just reading them their favorite "beary" tale will have them asleep in no time. The little bears wreak havoc when Papa is the one who falls asleep. Baby has tons of fun riding Papa's great belly. Big brother tests the limits by playfully tickling Papa's nose with a feather. The young ballerina swings on the lamp to add just the right touch to her performance. Little brother is trapped in a rocking chair jail, his favorite toy just out of reach. Even the family pets join the antics as puppy tunnels under the carpet and kitty tries to get that most delicious looking fish. And Papa sleeps through it all. Papa better wake up before Mama gets home!

"Mama's Day Off" is designed by Terri Hardin and Lynette Eklund.

Construction of the float is entirely by volunteers.

FLOWERING:

Bear cubs of butterscotch mums and straw flower with ti leaf pads and seaweed eyes, dressed in carnations, cotton, sweet rice, statice, crushed bougainvillea and straw flower, wreak havoc under a sesame seed rocking chair with a cane seat of braided raffia, and on the antique lamp of silver leaf, pulverized straw flower and corn husk.

Big brother tickles Papa of coca palm and Hyacinth root. Papa, his head resting on a pillow of peach Sonia roses, asleep in his tweed chair of ground green peas, is warm and cozy under the Dresden Plate Design lap quilt of iris, daisies, roses, bachelor buttons and parsley bordered by peach carnations.

Kitty, of pampas grass and Hyacinth root, wears a poinsettia leaf petaled collar as she tips the wood grain pedestal of walnut shell, flax, carrot and niger seeds. She's eager to get to the tasty looking goldfish of dried papaya, lunaria, seaweed and antherium. As the pedestal and bowl tip, the dendrobium orchid, delphinium and sprouted potato vine water splashes.

The plush, hi-low texture yellow carpet of mums, peas, straw flower, cracked corn, millet and Chana dal is rumpled by the tunneling of the coconut and onion seed Dalmatian puppy.

ANIMATION:

The kitty extends and retracts as she leans on the pedestal, causing the pedestal and fish bowl to tilt.

A pivot at carpet level allows the lamp to teeter as the ballerina bear holds tightly on a pull chain while swinging.

The hydraulic system retracts and raises the teetering lamp (to avoid obstructions).

INNOVATIONS USED IN BUILDING THIS FLOAT:

Burbank Tournament of Roses Association recycles a percentage of the float each year by building mechanisms that can be stored for future use. For example, the post for the antique lamp was previously used as a mast on the 1995 float, "Reach for the Wind", and as the dragon's tail on the 1996 float, "Dreamflight".

The bears' head are formed of patterned sheet foam. The faces and paws are carved foam. The combination provides a natural appearance.

HUMAN INTEREST ITEMS:

One of only 6 self-built floats, every element of design, construction and decorating is provided entirely by volunteers. Volunteers work year round soliciting funds, equipment, advanced technology and methods from local businesses, and sell souvenirs such as T-shirts, pins and patches to help raise additional funding.

Increased community involvement continues in the "Backyards of Burbank" program started 5 years ago. Residents of Burbank and surrounding communities contributed home-grown bougainvillea.

Several foam carving demonstrations and classes were provided to Association members, interested parties from the self-built floats, and members of the general public who then carved the paws.

"MAMA"S DAY OFF" is designed by members Terri Hardin, a puppeteer, puppet designer, illustrator, voice actress and artist with a passionate love for sculpting, and Lynette Eklund, a puppeteer, sculptor and designer of various monsters and other creatures for the film industry.

FLOAT RIDERS:

There are no float riders on this year's float.
